Great filler results start 24 hours before you sit in my chair. While I use expert techniques to minimize trauma to the tissue, bruising and swelling are natural biological responses to injections. However, you can significantly reduce your downtime by following a strict pre-appointment protocol. Here is your checklist to ensure you leave with a plump pout, not a bruised one.
The Science of Vasodilation (The “No-Go” List)
To minimize bruising, we need to avoid anything that thins the blood or dilates your blood vessels (vasodilation). When blood is thin, it leaks out of capillaries more easily if they are nicked during injection.
Avoid 24-48 Hours Prior: Alcohol (especially red wine), Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Aleve.
Supplements: Pause Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Gingko Biloba, and St. John’s Wort. These are natural blood thinners that many people forget about.
Hydration is Key
Hyaluronic Acid (HA), the main ingredient in our fillers, is hydrophilic—it loves water. It works by attracting water molecules to the injection site to create volume. If you are dehydrated, the filler has less water to grab onto, which can affect the initial “plump” and healing process. Drink at least 2 liters of water the day before your appointment.
Caffeine Warning
I know, asking you to skip your morning coffee is tough. But caffeine can raise your blood pressure and increase jitters. High blood pressure pushes blood through the vessels with more force, increasing the risk of a bruise. Being jittery also makes it harder for you to sit still during the delicate sculpting process.
Arrival Protocol
Please arrive with a clean face. While I will sanitize the injection site thoroughly, wearing heavy foundation or lipstick increases the risk of bacteria entering the micro-injection points. A clean canvas ensures a sterile, safe procedure.
